Sammy Engele, Student Activities Manager
Name: Sammy Engele
Position and department: Student Activities Manager, Degree Programmes Office
- You’re the Student Activities Manager. Can you tell us a little bit more about your role?
I help support the student clubs at LBS as part of the Student Activities Team. We make sure that the various departments are aware of all the fantastic events students are organising, as a lot of these can help the School achieve a number of its key objectives. We focus largely on professional events such as conferences but we also support initiatives that have a wider community appeal such as LBS for London and LBS Shares.
- You also sit on the Community Action Group committee? What does that entail?
At a very basic level CAG is our staff volunteering scheme. We find opportunities for staff and faculty to volunteer in the local community. More and more we are engaged in various initiatives with the local community which go beyond just volunteering, such as the Christmas Toy Drive, Faculty masterclass sessions for local high school pupils and last year we hosted a speaker event on campus with Martina Milburn who is the Chief Executive of The Prince’s Trust.
- Where is your favourite place in London and why?
Regents Canal at King's Cross, it’s a great place to hang out when the sun is shining. The last time I went there, it was absolutely boiling, a random guy turned up with a portable stereo and started playing the coolest chilled out tunes ever, it was so perfect.
- What is top of your bucket list?
I’ve been to Glastonbury a couple of times and a few other smaller festivals but I have never done a proper music festival outside of the UK so I'm hoping to go to Sziget in Budapest next summer.
- Who would play you in the film of your life?
I would have loved a young Sidney Poitier but as things stand I would say John Boyega who played Moses in Attack the Block and is also in the upcoming Star Wars movie.
- Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?
Arsene Wenger and Jay Z. I’d have so many questions for these two there would barely be any time to eat!
- What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
The best time to fix a leaky roof is when the sun is shining.
- What do you consider your greatest achievement?
I was the 2nd fastest person over a 20 meter sprint on my University Sports Course which included several semi-professional athletes, mostly from rugby and cricket but the achievement stands! I like to remind myself of this now that I’m getting older and slightly heavier.
- What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Enthusiasm is contagious, be a carrier.
- Tell us something surprising about you
I once met Harry Styles from One Direction at an Arsenal football game!
