His talk was recently promoted to mainstage TED Talk status and promoted across the global forum, joining a select group of worldwide speakers. Let's find out more about Professor Edmans!

Briefly describe to us your journey to becoming an LBS Professor…

After university, I worked in investment banking for Morgan Stanley in London. I then did a PhD at MIT and was a professor at Wharton for six years before moving to LBS in 2013.

What has been the highlight of your time at LBS?

Through my teaching I get to meet hundreds of smart young people each year. It’s really gratifying seeing them willing to challenge themselves in ways such as volunteering to give a stock pitch in class, or to answer a tricky question despite being new to finance.

What do you like to get up to in your spare time, away from research?

I’m passionate about sports and fitness. In the States I used to play a lot of team sports, now I mainly do running, triathlons, and obstacle courses.

My most recent event was the Barry’s Beasts Challenge, a competition to which Barry’s Bootcamp (a very difficult boutique fitness studio) hand-selected their fittest (craziest?!) clients. I believe that mental and physical wellbeing are really important for both business and life, so I take my students to Barry’s too – it’s another challenge that I love seeing them conquer.

I also play keyboards for my church band, which is very modern and also features drums, electric guitar, and bass. I previously was in the LBS band which played at Sundowners, Tattoo, and at external venues such as Shoreditch. Like sports, this also uses a different side of my brain to finance.

Name five celebrities you’d invite to your dream party…

Stuart Pearce, Steve Coppell, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks and Bear Grylls.

Tell us something surprising about yourself…

I used to box in Philadelphia, and fought a boxing match in the ring where Rocky V was filmed.
