Meet the Sloan Programme Office Team

With our Sloan 50th anniversary celebrations now under way, we spoke to Senior Programme Manager Nicola Allum who introduces us to the rest of the Sloan Programme Office Team: Shona Macfarlane, Director, Sloan Programme and Business Improvement and Fatima Begum, Sloan Programme Administrator.

What is the Sloan programme and who is it for?

The LBS Sloan Masters in Leadership and Strategy is a specialist immersive programme for experienced global professionals. The programme focusses on leadership, strategy and business fundamentals, and is taught over 12 months, commencing in January each year. The students on the programme are known as Sloan Fellows and there are approximately 60 in each class. Although the class size is smaller than other programmes, collectively they represent over 1,000 years of work experience (an average of 19 years).

What’s unique about the programme?

London Business School is the only business school in the world to offer an immersive, full-time, one-year masters specialising in leadership and strategy for experienced global professionals. There is no other programme like it.

Who’s in the programme team and what do you do?

We are a small team of three: Shona Macfarlane (Programme Director), myself (Senior Programme Manager), and Fatima Begum, who is working with us while we carry out the recruitment process for our third team member (Programme Manager). The Sloan Programme team is responsible for the design and delivery of the programme. We also provide general and tailored support to the Sloan Fellows for the duration of the programme (from onboarding and orientation through to graduation) to ensure that the Sloan Fellows have the best possible programme experience.

What has been your biggest Sloan highlight so far?

Fatima: Meeting all the Sloan Fellows during orientation and being part of the most professionally experienced group at LBS.
Shona: The Capstone event as it showcases the uniqueness of each cohort as well as celebrates their Sloan journey.
Nicola: Standing on the side of the stage at Congregation, watching the Sloan Fellows walk across in their caps and gowns having successfully completed the programme. It gives me goose bumps every time.

What’s your favourite thing about LBS?

Fatima: How everyone is very supportive and helpful within the Leadership Programme teams. There are always opportunities to get to know what’s going on within Leadership Programmes and where LBS is heading.
Shona: The people.
Nicola: The fantastic opportunities. Opportunities to learn, develop, connect, socialise and challenge yourself.

How will you be celebrating the 50th anniversary year?

We are commencing the celebrations with a Sloan 50th Anniversary lecture – “Words, images and analogies”by Dean François on 20 March. Our current Sloan 2018 class and Sloan alumni will be in attendance. A networking reception will follow the lecture, and we are really looking forward to celebrating with the Sloan Fellows, past and present!

What should we look out for or look forward to over the next year?

We’ll keep you informed of further events throughout the year. Check out the Sloan 50th Anniversary web pages for information on the programme. We are working towards a finale anniversary event in the autumn term.
